For an orthotics and prosthetics clinic, a useful 3D scan is one the design team can open, assess, and work from. Missing anatomy, an unclear patient position, or a file the fabrication partner cannot import can mean another appointment.

EinScan Medixa brings scanning, processing, and an O&P-focused interface into one handheld device. Its included onboard software lets clinicians capture and review surface geometry without a separate scanning computer. This guide covers where it fits in a clinic, what the software includes, and how to evaluate the complete path from patient capture to a usable design file.

The scanner has presets for cranial and facial capture, the torso, upper and lower limbs, feet, sockets, seating, and foam boxes. Choose the preset around the intended deliverable, then agree on the capture conditions with the person who will modify or fabricate from that scan.
| Application | Capture focus | Agree with the design or fabrication team |
|---|---|---|
| Limb and socket workflows | The relevant limb surface or an existing socket | Required coverage, landmarks, limb position, and how the scan will be modified |
| Torso and cranial workflows | Body-region geometry and any required surface markings | Positioning protocol, boundaries, and whether the receiving software needs texture |
| Foot and ankle workflows | Foot geometry using the dedicated foot-scanning setup | Foot Station 2 configuration, capture conditions, and sole coverage |
| Seating and foam-box workflows | The selected seating surface or impression geometry | Which contours must remain intact during trimming and export |

These are capture workflows, not automatic device-design prescriptions. Clinical assessment, corrective design, fabrication, and fitting remain separate responsibilities. A clean mesh alone does not establish that an orthosis or prosthesis will fit as intended.
Medixa includes its native onboard O&P software for scanning, processing, editing, measurement, and export. SKYLAB3D's current configuration does not require a separate license or ongoing subscription for that native workflow. EXModel and Inspect are not included or required for standard onboard operation.

The integrated screen lets the operator inspect the capture before moving on. The documented measurement tools include a bounding box and point-to-point distance. A geodesic option measures distance along a connected surface; it is not the same measurement as a straight line between two points.
Ask separately about any downstream O&P design platform, laboratory service, or manufacturing system. Being able to export a mesh does not include the receiving software's license, a fabricated device, or clinical design services.

Prepare a stable, comfortable position under the clinic's protocol. Hair and clothing can obscure the intended surface. Movement compensation is intended to help with slight motion; it does not remove the need to manage patient position or inspect the result.
If the lab relies on skin markings, demonstrate texture capture and verify that those markings survive the chosen export and import path. Appearance on the scanner screen is only the first check.
The dedicated feet-scanning procedure uses a bound Foot Station 2. It supports single-foot or both-feet capture. The documented Insole-SMO mode covers the sole to the ankle, while AFO-KAFO extends from the sole toward the thigh.
During a demonstration, check that the station markers remain visible and that the sole is complete. The manufacturer's procedure cautions against strong overhead direct light. Have the clinician define the appropriate positioning and loading conditions for the intended device.
Review Foot Station 2 compatibility and configuration alongside the scanner. It is an accessory, not a standalone scanner, and should appear as a separate item unless the selected package explicitly includes it.
Medixa exports STL, OBJ, and PLY files. Its documented sharing options include riiForm, BabySymmetry, and Protosthetics, with supported formats varying by platform. Confirm the exact import requirements and account access with your receiving team before committing to a workflow.
Scanning runs on the device itself. For USB-C file transfer, Windows supports direct access through the system file manager. On a Mac, the manufacturer instructs users to install third-party transfer software such as OpenMTP. That is a transfer requirement, not a statement that a desktop scanning application runs on macOS.
Activate the device before the first export; unactivated devices cannot upload or export projects. For the handoff test, open a representative file in the actual destination software and confirm scale, orientation, visible landmarks, and any required texture. Send the capture position and relevant project notes through the clinic's approved record process.
Before using any cloud-sharing route for patient data, have the clinic's privacy and IT leads approve it. HHS guidance calls for appropriate risk analysis and business associate arrangements when a HIPAA-regulated organization uses a cloud provider to handle electronic protected health information. A sharing feature by itself does not establish compliance.
A useful evaluation ends with an accepted file, not just a successful scan on screen. Bring a representative, appropriately authorized test case and the receiving team's requirements.
For general human-shape capture in workplace or product development, our EinScan H2 ergonomic body-scanning guide covers that different application. Medixa's O&P presets and standalone operation are the focus here.

View EinScan MedixaYes. Medixa includes its native onboard O&P software for capture, processing, editing, measurement, and export. SKYLAB3D's current native-workflow configuration does not require a separate software license or ongoing subscription. Downstream design software and fabrication services are separate.
No external computer is required for onboard scanning and processing. For USB-C export, Windows supports direct file-manager access. Mac users need third-party file-transfer software such as OpenMTP, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Check the requirements of your downstream design software separately.
Treat Foot Station 2 as a separate accessory unless your selected package expressly includes it. The dedicated feet-scanning procedure uses a bound station. Confirm the complete configuration on the quote.
No. It produces surface geometry for an O&P workflow. Clinical assessment, design modification, fabrication, and fitting remain separate steps. Evaluate the exported scan in the software and process your clinic actually uses.
